The Truth About American Food: Why Non-Organic Isn’t Really Food

As a mom, you probably already know that feeding your family healthy food is important. But what if I told you that most of what’s sitting on grocery store shelves isn’t really food? That behind the shiny packaging and “natural” labels, there’s a system that’s making us sick — especially during pregnancy and postpartum, when your body needs the most support to grow, heal, and thrive.

In this post, I want to pull back the curtain on the American food system, explain why conventional, non-organic food is often full of harmful chemicals and additives, and why choosing organic is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself and your family.


What’s Really in Our Food?

America’s industrial agriculture system is built around maximizing yield and profits — not health. To do this, farmers use:

  • Pesticides and herbicides, including glyphosate (Roundup), sprayed heavily on crops. These chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption, infertility, and even cancer.
  • GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), engineered for shelf life or herbicide resistance. Many countries ban or restrict them, but here they’re common.
  • Artificial additives, preservatives, and dyes — often linked to gut issues, allergies, behavioral problems, and even neurotoxicity.
  • Hormones and antibiotics in meat and dairy — which can disrupt your own hormone balance and affect long-term health.

Why This Matters for Pregnancy and Postpartum

Whether you’re growing a baby or healing from birth, your body is working overtime. This is not the time to be feeding it chemicals, fake food, or hormone disruptors.

During pregnancy, everything you eat is literally building your baby’s brain, bones, immune system, and future health. And once baby is here, your body has to recover from one of the most intense physical events a human can experience.

Introducing toxic ingredients during these seasons can:

  • Increase inflammation, slowing recovery and intensifying pain or swelling
  • Disrupt your gut health, leading to food sensitivities and nutrient deficiencies
  • Throw off hormones and mood, triggering anxiety, fatigue, or postpartum crashes
  • Affect breastmilk quality, and your baby’s gut and immune development

You deserve better than that. Your baby does too.


Organic Food Is a Game-Changer

Switching to organic isn’t about being trendy — it’s about choosing real food that supports healing instead of harming. Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, bans GMOs, and skips the hormones and artificial preservatives.

When I began eating organic, I noticed:

  • More energy and better sleep
  • Less bloating and fewer migraines
  • Clearer skin
  • Less anxiety and more emotional stability

And as a mom, that matters so much more than a number on the scale.


Food for Life: Building a Legacy of Health and Longevity

My husband and I share a deep desire to live a long, healthy life — not just for ourselves, but so we can watch our children and grandchildren grow up, play with them, keep up, and stay active together as a family. We want to continue our health and fitness journey into old age and enjoy life without chronic pain or medications.

My husband is a professional kickboxer, and something he would always say to me when he was in a fight camp stuck with me. He would say, “What I eat today will show up in my fight performance (which could be weeks or months away) or he would say, “What you eat today will show up in 10 years.” He always had the self-discipline not to cheat on his meals or workouts. This made me respect him so much.

People want to make life changes, or have to when something bad happens to their health or to a loved one. Why not try to prevent it to begin with?

The food choices we make today aren’t just about healing from birth — they’re about building a foundation of lifelong health. When we feed our kids real, organic food now, we’re shaping their future habits, their immune systems, their mindset about food. We’re helping them avoid the struggle and confusion we had to or have to sort through as adults.

Choosing organic is about more than what’s on your plate — it’s about your future.


You Don’t Have to Go All In Overnight

I get it. Organic can feel overwhelming or expensive at first. But even small changes add up. You can start with:

  • Swapping the “Dirty Dozen” (foods most sprayed with pesticides) for organic versions
  • Buying organic eggs, dairy, and meats, especially if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Choosing whole foods over boxed or processed items when possible
  • Making slow, simple swaps — one item at a time

Or simply choose the foods that your family consumes the most frequently. There have been many times that I have had to make the decision about quality or quantity. I will always choose quality. My family eats fruit like there will be no tomorrow


Where to Shop Organic Without Breaking the Bank

There are affordable, creative ways to shop organic without blowing your budget:

1. Visit Your Local Farmers Market

This is one of the best ways to get organic (and often beyond organic) produce without the price markup. Many small farms use chemical-free practices even if they aren’t USDA certified organic. Plus, you’re supporting your local community! We find all of our eggs, meat, butter, and seasonal produce from our market.

2. Try Thrive Market

Thrive Market is an online store with tons of discounted organic groceries, clean household items, snacks, pantry staples, and even baby products — all shipped to your door. Think Costco meets Whole Foods, but curated for health-conscious moms.

3. Explore Misfits Market

Misfits Market is a grocery subscription service that delivers “imperfect” but perfectly fresh organic produce and high-quality pantry items at a discount. You customize your box, and they ship it to your door — sustainably and affordably.

4. Shop Stores That Prioritize Clean Living

You don’t need a boutique store to find organic! Some of my favorite spots include:

  • Sprouts Farmers Market – affordable organic produce and clean packaged goods
  • Natural Grocers – tons of supplements and clean snacks with a strict ingredient policy
  • Aldi – surprisingly great organic staples on a budget
  • Whole Foods through Amazon Prime – Whole Foods is a little out of the way for me, so I take advantage of Amazon’s delivery option with my Prime membership. Not only is it super convenient for busy moms, but Prime also gives you exclusive discounts on groceries. If you’re short on time or energy (hello, postpartum!), this is a total game-changer.
  • Sam’s Club – have a decent organic fresh produce section.
  • Costco – Same as Sam’s Club, but I’d say they have a larger selection of organic items.

5. Bonus Tool: The Yuka App

Download the Yuka app! It’s a game-changer for healthy living. You can scan barcodes on packaged food (and personal care products), and it will tell you exactly what’s in it — including additives, pesticides, and chemical ingredients. It even explains what those additives are linked to, so you can make informed choices while you’re shopping.
